Great capture and composition, Doug!! I can almost imagine my Dad flying in one of these while he was training in Canada. Such a beautiful plane.

There is definitely a book in the making. My father trained in glider planes and got his glider's pilot's license while waiting to join the RAF. Like I said, he was in a reserve occupation, so I think this was frustrating for him because he had the calling to fly. I have some memorabilia connected to his training and, by the way, he was also a photographer. It often talked about the family he lived with in Canada, and some of his old photos were taken with those family members. Season's Greetings!

My father joined the RAF as a pilot/navigator. He did all his training in Canada during WW II--taking the Queen Mary to NY and then traveling to Canada by rail. He trained in Tiger Moths, Spitfires, and the Lancaster Bomber. He was a true Renaissance Man. As a aircraft design engineer, he moved his family to the United States in the late 1960s after accepting a position at Boeing. Prior to joining the RAF, he had a reserved occupation status as a designer/draftsman. For his 76th birthday in 1999, I arranged for him to take a refresher flight training. A WW II Veteran, he passed away in 2015. I thought you might find this interesting. By the way, my mother served four years in the Royal Army Corps--ATS as a payroll officer. My grandfather served as an Air Mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps in WW I. I have one vintage photo of him wearing his uniform.

Lesley, thank you for writing about your family's interesting history with aircraft. My father had a similar story except he was Canadian but did train on Tiger Moths. He did not carry on in the aero industry but I did, joining the RCAF. That and what followed are too long a story to post here : )
